Beauty, Breeze and the Battle with Pollen.

The Allergy Diaries

Spring in Japan is nothing short of magical. It’s that gentle nudge from nature that says, “Hey, you survived winter. Go outside and feel human again!” The icy grip of the cold loosens, the sun comes out just a little longer, and there’s that perfect, Goldilocks kind of breeze, cool enough to refresh you, warm enough to thaw your soul. It’s the kind of weather that practically begs for a picnic under the soft pink canopy of cherry blossoms. Honestly, if Seasons had résumés, spring would get hired on the spot.

But as with all good things, there’s a catch. Just when you're out there feeling like the main character in a Studio Ghibli film, nature throws in its little plot twist: hay fever.

Yes, the very same breeze that gently rustles the Sakura petals into poetic flurries is also the one hurling microscopic pollen missiles straight into your sinuses. One moment you're admiring the bloom; the next, you’re sneezing like an old cartoon character and rubbing your itchy nose like it owes you money. It’s less "tranquil spring awakening," and more "survival mode with tissues."

Sleep? A distant memory. The nights are a cycle of tossing, turning, and wondering how something as small as pollen can wage such a personal war.

Still, here's the thing: it does pass. Eventually, the sneezing calms, the flowers fade, and you’re left with a memory of beauty that (mostly) overshadows the discomfort. So yes, spring might have its sneaky little side hustle as a pollen distributor, but it also reminds us that better days are blooming, literally. And if you can make it through the sneezes, the red eyes, and the midnight nose scratching, you’ll find yourself on the doorstep of summer. And that’s when the real fun begins. Think festivals, fireworks, sun-soaked adventures, and, most importantly; a break from the pollen parade.

So hang in there. Sip some tea, enjoy the blossoms through slightly teary eyes, and know this: you're just a few sneezes away from summer!
