Starting Where I am
I was sitting at my desk, finishing up some tasks for the day, when I suddenly started to wonder: How can I be more productive in the days ahead?
In my line of work, there are days when I can barely breathe with everything I need to finish. But then there are also those quiet days where all I seem to do is sit and slowly burn a hole in my chair (lol).
As I stared out the window, hoping for ideas or some kind of clarity, it hit me: I have a proficiency test coming up! That little jolt of memory sent me reaching for my practice book, and before I knew it, I was back to studying. I had almost forgotten how much I needed to prepare. With less than two months left, I need to do more than just familiarize myself with kanji; I need to really understand them. I want to read, write, and use them confidently, especially in context and grammar.
Learning a new language is no small task, but I genuinely enjoy it. There’s something so fulfilling about being able to connect with people from different cultures. And since I live in Japan, having native-level fluency isn’t just a dream, it feels like a necessity.
Will I get there? I don’t know yet. But what I do know is that I’m motivated to try, and I’m not giving up. That’s what I always tell my students: Do your best and never give up. So this time, I’m telling it to myself too.
So here I am, making a little promise to myself; to keep going, one page at a time, one kanji at a time. Progress doesn’t always look exciting, but it adds up.
Maybe you're working on something too, something that feels big or even a little out of reach. If so, let this be a reminder: it’s okay to start small. What matters is that you start, and you keep going.
